About Open Arms CAFS

Open Arms CAFS is built around a simple belief: more opportunities create more experiences, and more experiences create more opportunities for growth.

What started in 2012 as a small passion project focused primarily on supporting children and families has continued to grow and change over the years. Open Arms began in Kent, Washington, with a genuine desire to create more opportunities for children who may not always have access to them. As my own education, professional experience, and understanding of the systems around people grew, so did the vision for Open Arms.

Today, that vision reaches much further.

Open Arms CAFS works across the individual, family, professional, and organizational levels. Our work may look different depending on who we are working alongside. Sometimes it means helping someone navigate resources or systems. Sometimes it means supporting a caregiver who is trying to figure out what will actually work at home. Other times, it may mean helping a professional build their skills, facilitating a training, consulting with a team, or helping an organization take a closer look at the systems affecting its people.

That growth is also why CAFS now represents:

Collaboration. Advocacy. Facilitation. Solutions.

Our Commitment:

Our commitment is to create a space where people feel heard, respected, and supported without judgment.

We are committed to being honest about what we can provide, listening when something is not working, and adjusting our approach when needed. We understand that asking for support can sometimes mean trusting someone with very personal parts of your life, your family, your work, or your organization. We do not take that trust lightly.

Whether someone comes to Open Arms for guidance, resources, skill development, professional support, or organizational change, our commitment remains the same: meet people where they are, recognize the strengths they already bring, and help create meaningful opportunities for growth.

Susan
Founder, Parent Coach, Life Coach, Art Coach

Hello, my name is Susan, and I founded Open Arms Child and Family Services in 2012. My personal journey through the foster care system left me feeling voiceless as I moved from home to home, grappling with the challenges of abandonment and hopelessness. During a student leadership retreat, I was asked to reflect on my life’s purpose, and I wrote, “to give hope to the hopeless.” While this is a profound and ambitious goal, it has guided my path ever since. I entered this field because I have a genuine and authentic listening heart and a deep desire to help others become exactly who they were meant to be… I believe that with the right support, everyone has the opportunity to heal, grow, and rediscover hope within themselves.

Joe
Financial Coach

My name is Joe, and like many, I struggled with significant debt for years, often feeling as though I would never overcome it. However, with the support of family and friends, and a strong commitment to change, I transformed the way I managed my finances. Between 2015 and 2019, I participated in coaching sessions that enabled me to eliminate $20,000 in debt. In 2019, I earned my Financial Coach Master Training certification. I am now dedicated to helping others take control of their finances and improve their lives. Together, we can work towards achieving your financial goals!

Brenda
Life Insurance Agent

My name is Brenda, I am an independent agent. My passion is helping clients “prosper safely” . I help them identify common financial pitfalls, and educate them on how to protect finances from risk. I am financially conservative by nature with my resources and so that led me into discovering several strategies where I can experience great growth without losing sleep over what the market will do next. I don’t like the stress of it or the fear of the loss that comes with it.

Susan

Hello, my name is Susan, and I am the founder of Open Arms CAFS. The heart behind Open Arms is personal for me. I spent part of my childhood in the foster care system, moving from home to home and often feeling like I didn't have much of a voice in what was happening around me. I know what it feels like to need someone in your corner, to need opportunities that may not automatically be available to you, and sometimes to simply need someone who will listen. Years later, during a student leadership retreat, I was asked to think about my life's purpose. I wrote five words: “to give hope to the hopeless.” It was a big statement then, and honestly, it still is. But the meaning behind those words has continued to shape the work I choose to do and the kind of person I want to be while doing it. I entered this field because I genuinely care about people. I listen. I ask questions. I want to understand what is happening beyond what we can see on the surface. Most importantly, I believe people deserve to have a voice in their own lives and access to opportunities that allow them to learn, experience, make choices, build skills, and grow. I don't believe helping someone means having all the answers for them. Sometimes it means advocating beside them. Sometimes it means teaching a skill, finding a resource, creating an opportunity, asking a different question, or simply being willing to sit with someone long enough to figure out what comes next. That belief has grown alongside Open Arms and continues to guide what we do today.

Core values

Authenticity

We believe in showing up genuinely and honestly. Building trust starts with listening, being transparent, and creating space for people to be themselves

Individuality

There is no one size fits all approach. Every person, family, professional, and organization brings different experiences, strengths, needs, and goals. Support should reflect that.

Growth

We believe growth comes from opportunity, experience, and continued learning. We focus on building strengths, developing meaningful skills, and creating opportunities for lasting change.

Our Approach

At Open Arms CAFS, we recognize that people, families, and organizations are complex. There is rarely one simple answer or one approach that works for everyone.

We take the time to understand the whole picture, including individual experiences, strengths, environments, relationships, systems, and barriers. Our work draws from social work, behavioral science, trauma-informed practices, and lived experience to provide support that is practical and individualized.

We believe in working with people, not doing things to or for them. That means listening first, building on strengths, teaching meaningful skills, and creating opportunities for people to take what they learn and use it in their everyday lives.
